Having the Desire to Reach Your Goal

Have you ever had this conversation with a friend, or yourself…”I don’t understand why I didn’t meet my goal. I made it attainable and realistic. I set a time limit. I was committed. I even told my friends about it for support. And yet I didn’t reach it.” Frustrating, right? Well let me ask you this, how strong was your desire? Was it an intense, burning desire? Were you passionate?

Desire starts in the mind. Now, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, your desire may be forgotten. You look at your desk and think of all the tasks to accomplish, or you get home and you have to make dinner. Whatever it is, you’ve got a busy life and that goal, that desire, gets lost.
The key is to keep your mind focused so that the desire becomes a habit. Studies show that our brain creates patterns and tracks in our thinking process. If you keep thinking the same thought, it becomes a habit. The desire becomes stronger and stronger. Once you have that intense desire for your goal, it’s time to take action.

Great, you’re thinking, I’m committed to my desire, now how do I take action. The answer is simple. Action is in the details and details bring desire to life because you are training your mind to stay focused. Create a list of all the benefits you would receive from reaching your goal. Let’s say your goal is to make a certain amount of money. Make a list of all the benefits from having that money. Include you, your family, your lifestyle, your professional growth; everything that would be affected by that money. The longer your list, the stronger your desire becomes. And you get to see how your life would really change from achieving one goal. The bottom line is if you have the intense desire, you have the power to make it a reality.

Getting started is simple. First, choose a goal and intensify your desire by making the thought become a habit. Using the money example again, everyday you would say to yourself, I am going to make x amount of money by x date. Think it enough so it becomes a habit. Second, write down all the benefits from having that money in your life. You now have the foundation for reaching your goal.

Change is always impossible until the moment we are willing to acknowledge that things are not yet perfect.
